How To Make Matcha Tea: 4 Different Methods

Making Matcha tea is a tad more complicated than simply dipping a tea bag into a hot cup of water. But the extra effort is worth it when you taste it.

And another great thing about Matcha is that there isn’t just one way to make yourself a cup (or a bowl) of it. Here’s how to make Matcha tea as a satisfying traditional drink as well as a few tasty eats.

1. Ceremonial Matcha

There are two main types of Matcha powder—culinary grade and ceremonial grade—with the latter being the highest quality and most common to drink. For centuries, ceremonial Matcha is the tea that’s been used in traditional Japanese tea ceremonies.

To make ceremonial Matcha, you first need the traditional tools, which include a Matcha bowl, bamboo whisk and bamboo spoon.

Once you have the right tools, you begin making this delightful tea by putting 1 tsp. of ceremonial grade Matcha into your bowl. Next, pour 1 oz. of hot water into the bowl, and mix the water and Matcha powder together using the bamboo whisk. Then, add another 1 oz. of hot water into the bowl and mix again.

2. Berry Matcha Smoothie Bowl

Spring is in full bloom, and our favorite berries are finally in season. So on a hot day when you’re craving a fresh berry treat, you’ve got to make this Berry Matcha Smoothie Bowl recipe.

All you need is a ½ cup of ice, 2 tsp. of Matcha powder, a ½ cup of berries and ¾ cup of almond milk. Combine all of your ingredients in a blender, blend until smooth and then pour out into a bowl. Now you can either eat it as is, or if you’re like me, you’ll want to throw some fresh berries and granola on top for extra color, texture and flavor.

3. Eggplant and Rice Entree

For a healthy lunch—that also gives you a boost of energy—you’ve got to make this Miso-Glazed Eggplant and Green Tea Rice recipe. If the eggplant threw you off, you can easily substitute that ingredient for salmon.

It only takes 15 minutes to prep and 45 minutes to cook. But then you can take as long as you want to savor the flavor of each bite of this deliciously nutritious meal.

4. Green Tea Pasta

Another Matcha enthusiasts’ favored way to consume Matcha is by making our Green Tea Pasta recipe. Sure if you want pasta for dinner you could always grab takeout from a local Italian restaurant. But if you want vibrant-colored pasta that reaps the benefits of Matcha then you need to make this unique twist on homemade pasta.

The only ingredients you need are flour, salt, olive oil, eggs and Matcha powder—all of which you probably already have in your kitchen. Once your pasta is mixed, kneaded, rolled out, cut and cooked in boiling water, you then toss it with your favorite pasta sauce for a healthier and cheaper dinner option tonight.
