Understanding Sugar Alcohols Which are Best

Getting to know sugar alcohols

When it comes to Valentine's Day, most of us are ready! The typical items are found everywhere - flowers, stuffed animals, and most sweets. Whether it is chocolate covered strawberries, candy hearts, hearts filled with candy, chocolate hearts, chocolate kisses- the list can get quite long! The truth is when we are trying to be sweet for our sweetie, we might be putting them into insulin shock or a sugar coma!

So, how do we give someone we love the sweets they desire without going overboard?

More and more people are turning to sugar alternatives to curb their sweet tooth. Products like Erythritol, monk fruit, sorbitol, and xylitol are all increasing in popularity due to the fact that they have sugar alcohol and not sugar.

What is sugar alcohol? Even though “alcohol” is in the name, sugar alcohols do not contain alcohol. Like sugar, they activate the sweet taste sensors on your tongue and do contain calories. On the plus side - sugar alcohols have fewer calories than sugar. Sugar alcohol will not elevate your blood sugar levels as much as sugar and could even help prevent tooth decay.

Where are sugar alcohols found? Most sugar-free gums, mints, and mouthwashes contain sugar alcohol called xylitol. It also contains about 40% fewer calories than sugar.

Sorbitol can be found in most sugar-free food, drinks, and candy. If you are counting calories, this is a good one to use. It is sweeter than sugar but contains 60% fewer calories!

The last and probably the best one out there is erythritol. Erythritol could be argued to have the best taste of all sugar alcohols. It is found in most alternative sweeteners and is great to have around for baking and cooking. This sugar alcohol is absorbed in the bloodstream and does not show signs affecting your insulin and blood sugar levels.

This holiday can definitely be a little more sweet, with a lot fewer calories. Have the person that you love be the sweetest thing in your life this year!
