When I think about Turmeric, the thing that comes to mind is the wonderful aroma spice that brings a vibrant yellow color to many Indian dishes like curry, rice, and other ethnic foods. Not only is this herb very colorful and tasteful but it provides many healing benefits to the human body that are safe and effective and don’t bring harsh side effects like other over the counter medicines.

History of Turmeric

Turmeric started to emerge in 500 BCE and became a very important part of Ayurvedic medicine. Ayurvedic medicine was used by our Indian ancestors to help heal body ailments naturally and quickly.  Wounds and skin conditions like chickenpox and shingles could be treated with this very healing herb. Ayurveda translates to “science of life”– ayur meaning “life” and veda meaning “science or knowledge.”

“Ayurvedic literature contains over 100 different terms for turmeric, including jayanti, meaning “one who is victorious over diseases,” and matrimanika, meaning “as beautiful as moonlight.” As you can see this herb had very healing properties in it that strengthen and soothe the body.
